Dr Hilary Caldwell is an author, sexologist, nurse, and advocate for gender equality—and a proud sex worker.

With a PhD from UNSW, multiple master’s degrees, and over two decades of experience in sex work, she brings a unique perspective to conversations about gender, sexuality, and power.

In 2003, as a single mother of four juggling nursing shifts and childcare, she began sex work to support her family. What started as a practical decision became a transformative journey—reshaping her understanding of gender politics, human connection, and social change. This experience led her to pursue advanced studies in sexual health, culminating in her work as a practising sexologist.

She kept her academic and professional worlds separate for twenty years to protect her family. With the publication of Slutdom, she chose to come out and integrate these experiences—using her distinctive position to challenge assumptions and advocate for change. Yes, she told her children first. Yes, they were surprised… and supportive!

As a researcher and practitioner, Dr. Caldwell combines theory with real-world insight, bridging disciplines to explore how sexual empowerment intersects with gender equality, human rights, and social justice.
