Breaking down barriers
In 2003, as a single mother of four juggling nursing shifts with childcare, I began sex work to support my family. What started as a practical decision became a journey that would transform my understanding of gender politics, human connection, and social change. The experience led me to pursue a deeper academic understanding, completing advanced degrees in sexual health and ultimately becoming a practicing sexologist.
For twenty years, I kept these worlds separate to protect my family from stigma. With the publication of "Slutdom," I made the decision to integrate my experiences, using my distinctive position to challenge assumptions and advocate for change. (Yes, I told my children first. Yes, they were surprised… and supportive!)
My work combines rigorous research methodology with real-world insights that could only come from living between these different worlds. As both a practitioner and researcher, I've developed a deep understanding of how sexual empowerment connects to broader issues of gender equality.
